From the Manufacturer
Canon's new compact 3.2-megapixel PowerShot A510 digital camera with a powerful 4x optical zoom provides you with a comfortable introduction to the fun and freedom of digital photography.

Named for their use of AA batteries, Canon's A-series digital cameras offer easy-to-use, high quality features to consumers looking to capture, save, and share meaningful memories, personal milestones and family functions.

The next generation PowerShot A510 digital camera is 13 percent smaller and 10 percent lighter than its predecessor, yet it is equipped with a longer 4.0x 35-140mm (35mm format equivalent) optical zoom lens with Canon optics for sharp images. The new lens features all-glass construction and two aspherical elements in a seven-element formula.

In order to make the camera smaller, Canon engineered the new PowerShot A510 model to accept SD media. Even with its small size, the camera sports a large 1.8-inch LCD screen for easy preview and review. It also includes Canon's exclusive DIGIC image processor for faster processing speed and excellent image quality with crisp, vibrant colors.

The PowerShot A510 digital camera requires only two AA batteries, while providing the same number of shots (300 with LCD screen on) as previous models that used four batteries, thanks to reductions in power consumption made possible by improvements in key components and circuit design.

Like its A75 predecessor, the PowerShot A510 digital camera is equipped with a nine-point AiAF "smart" autofocus system and 13 shooting modes. The standard shooting modes are Full Auto, Program, Manual, Shutter-priority, and Aperture-priority with additional modes including Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Fast Shutter, Slow Shutter, Special Scene, Stitch Assist, and Movie. The Special Scene mode, which makes it easy for beginners to achieve optimum results in many popular photo opportunities, has been enhanced with the addition of two new settings called Night Snapshot and Kids and Pets. The PowerShot A510 digital camera is also capable of recording movies with sound for up to three minutes per clip, making it perfect for capturing memories in motion.

The new camera's grip is ergonomically improved, and the control layout is even easier to use than before. Other camera functions including self-timer and review have also been enhanced for greater creative flexibility.

The DIGIC Difference
Image quality is enhanced and improved as a result of Canon's proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) image processor. DIGIC combines the roles of image processing and camera function control into one chip, resulting in faster display and write times for each image and lower power consumption, which extends battery life. Moreover, because DIGIC technology was designed specifically for use in digital cameras it is also capable of handling JPEG compression and expansion, memory card control, LCD/video control and processing gain control (control of CCD signal amplification), autoexposure, autofocus, auto white balance control, and most other functions.

Print/Share Button
Located on the backside of the PowerShot A510 digital camera is the Print/Share button. This button simplifies and accelerates direct printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge-enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows XP, Me, 2000, and 98 computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or as e-mail attachments. When the camera is connected to a compatible printer or computer, the Print/Share button illuminates to let the user know to press the Print/Share button to begin the printing or downloading process.

Optional Accessories
In addition to its rich feature set, the PowerShot A510 digital camera is compatible with a wide variety of optional accessories including supplementary wide-angle (WC-DC52), telephoto (TC-DC52A) and close-up lenses (52mm Close-up Lens 250D). These accessories enhance the new camera's versatility and make it easier to use in specialized applications such as real estate and insurance photography. A waterproof case WP-DC60 is also available and can be used at depths up to 130 feet. The combination of the A510 digital camera with the WP-DC60 housing is great for family vacations at the beach, while skiing, or simply to protect the camera from the elements.

What's in the Box:
The PowerShot A510 digital camera kit includes Interface Cable IFC-400PCU, AV Cable AVC-DC300, Wrist Strap WS-200, SD MultiMediaCard MMC-16M and two AA-size Alkaline batteries as well as Canon Digital Camera Solution Disc Version 22, featuring the latest versions of Canon’s powerful software and ArcSoft PhotoStudio.

Canon A510 reviews (130)

Slightly better than A400
This camera is my 3rd Canon digicam. My first Canon digicam was Canon a60 which was great but it was a bit too bulky for me. I bought this camera as a alternative option next to my canon a400 and I'm definitely satisfied.

Pros:
-4x Zoom ( Can't beat that!...many digicams only come with 3x)
-Big and bright 1.8 screen which gains light in the dark
-It's canon! Great lens and brand. Very reliable
-A bit faster shutter speed compared with Canon A400
-Very Comfortable to hold and very firm (has hand grip)
-Movie mode at 640x480 for 30sec and 320x240 for 3 mins max
-Use only 2 AA batteries. Last over 100 pics with flash and screen on at all time(I tested it with 2300mAh rechargable batteries)
-Fast start-up time(less than 3 second once you turn the camera on)
-Easy to use for anyone who familiar with canon digicam(same board which is Digic!...too bad this cam does not come with Digic2 which works faster and allows user to record longer movie clip)
-Great printing quality as usual for Canon

Cons:
-Still has slow shutter speed when taking picture at best quality with flash(up to 5 secs which isn't so bad compared to Canon A400)
-A bit bigger than other brand for the same price and pixels(but you get canon camera that uses AA battery + 4x zoom)
-The dial swich and capture/view switches are a bit hard to turn at first but it got easier after a month)

Overall, I love this camera as Canon seems to know what they are doing when they make their cameras. I'm one happy canon's customer. Buy it and you won't regret it.

Also, you can buy canon case psc60 which designed for A60-A95 models, it sure fits this canon a510 just fine. Or else, try the psc65 which designed just for Canon A510 and A520.

Hope this review will help someone who is deciding which camera to buy. Cheers!
Best selling digital camera!
Canon has fully redesigned the Powershot A series to make it lighter (uses only 2 AA batteries now), smaller and with 4x optical zoom.

Pro's,
1. Very good image quality.
2. 3 MP and 4x optical zoom is the perfect combo for most people.
3. Priced right, unlike some overpriced digicams out there.
4. Works on 2 normal AA batteries (buy rechargeable ones for extra life and lower cost), unlike expensive & hard-to-find propreitary batteries.
5. The menu on the Canon cameras is light years ahead of most other manufacturer's. Lots of manual options and scene modes.
6. Battery and SD card doors seem to be of above average quality.
7. 1.8" LCD screen is bright and fluid.
8. Uses standard SD cards, unlike propretary memory cards like Memory Stick or xD card.
9. Can attach extra lenses if one buys the adaptor for it.
10. Actual LCD screen looks nicely protected below a plastic plate.

Con's,
1. The camera is still quite thick (although not bulky).
2. It uses Digic instead of Digic2 processor in other new Canons.
3. Tripod mount is on the corner and made from plastic.

I guess you gotta spend more money to buy Elph series for more pocketability. I am almost sure this will be THE best selling camera of 2005, just like A60 and A75 in past. With a price this low for a fully loaded A510 there really is no reason to buy slightly cheaper but vastly inferior cameras from HP, Kodak, Olympus, Fuji or Samsung.
My First Digital Camera
If you are looking to buy your first digital camera at a good price, buy this one.

The Quick Start Guide is very easy to read and got me up and running immediately. In less than 15 minutes I was able to load the batteries, insert the memory card, turn the camera on, set the date and time, take my first picture, load the software onto my computer from the CD, download the image to my computer, and finally e-mail it to a friend.

Documentation that is included in the box:
- Quick Start Guide (2-sided, poster size, step-by-step pictorial)
- Camera User Guide (160 pages, pocket-size)
- Direct Print User Guide (49 pages, pocket size)
- Software Starter Guide (102 pages, larger pocket size)
- System Map (2-sided, A4 size, diagrams how all the accessories fit together)
- Warranty Card (postcard)
- "For Windowsý XP and Mac OS X Users" Leaflet (2-sided)
- "Canon Customer Support" Leaflet (2-sided)

Two accessories you should definitely buy are a larger memory/SD card and NiMH batteries with a battery charger. The 16 MB card that comes in the box does not hold many images. (I want to purchase a 256 SD Card, but the documentation does not specify how many recordable images it would hold.) Also, you will save money and trips to the store in the long run by using rechargeable batteries.

As someone who has been using a six year-old 35 mm camera, I am writing this as a novice user without the ability to compare other digital cameras. However, at this price and with 3.2-megapixels, I am happy to finally get away from my 35 mm camera.
excelent package at low price

If you were wondering which one to buy - Canon A510 (the compact) or Canon SD200 (the ultra-compact), here is the bottom line - A510 takes a bit sharper pics, has manual controls and longer battery life than SD200. On the other hand, SD200 is tinier and its movie mode is superior. Details below:

++ A510 is about $50-$100 cheaper than SD200 (get lowest prices with www.pricegrabber.com).

++ A510 has manual controls for focus, aperture and time of exposure (shutter speed); SD200 doesn't have any of these.

++ A510 takes a bit sharper pics than SD200. A510 doesn't have blurry pic conrners or pirple fringing, SD200 has both. The white balance on both cams is equivalent. The above differences would matter ony to experts - for most consumers both cameras produce really excellent pics - low noise, proper exposure and white balance even in dim light without flash or at night.

++ A510 uses two AA bateries (rechargeable or not); SD200 uses rechargeable lithium-ion battery (NB-4L);
According to Canon, the battery life of two rechargeable AA's in A510 is:
......300 shots (LCD on, CIPA test standard)
......800 shots (LCD off),
......300 minutes playback time.

The battery life of NB-4L in SD200 is:
......140 shots(LCD on, CIPA test standard),
......400 shots (LCD off),
......180 minutes playback time.

From the above data A510 has two times longer battery life.

-- A510 is compact (like a wallet full of cash lol) and you can carry it in your jacket or purse but not in your pants pocket. SD200 is ultra-compact (like a pack of cigaretts or a deck of cards) and you can really carry it in your jeans pocket but that is not advisable cause you may damage it - many people complained of easily cracked LCD screen.

-- A510 has 1.8 inches LCD, SD200 has 2.0 inches LCD.

-- A510 uses the older processor DIGIC I; SD200 uses the newer and faster DIGIC II, hence the differences below ...

-- A510 is a bit slower in responding and autofocusing than SD200 but the difference is less than 1/3 sec and doesn't matter much.

-- A510 records movies with limited length (30 sec at 640x480 resolution, 3 minutes at lower resolutions); SD200 records till the memory card is full.

-- A510 records movies with 10 frames/sec (at 640x480 pixels) and 15 frames/sec (at 320x240 pixels). SD200 lets you choose 30 frames/sec or 15 frames/sec (at both 640x480 and 320x240 pixels). If you are recording at 320x240 and 15 frames/sec, then the size of the file is about 230 KB/sec for both cameras.

-- A510 can produce a properly exposed movie ONLY if lighting conditions remain relatively CONSTANT during recording - the exposure is locked to the first movie frame and if you move around to a little darker corner or a little brighter lit room, the A510 movie will get unacceptably dark or bright correspondingly. SD200 doesn't have that problem since it adjusts the exposure continuously to match the changing light conditions during recording.

--- A510 uses USB1.1 to download pics/movies to a computer (download speed is 450 KB/sec on my computer), SD200 uses USB2.0 that is two times faster (900 KB/sec on my computer).

The Best Pocket size Digital Camera
This is my sixth digital camera. Though I am not taking pictures for a living now, I used to at one point of my life, and still know, humbly, better than many people that I encountered in the profession. I am now a web developer and often have to take pictures for the albums of the sites I manage; one is for a local newspaper, and the other is for a church governing body. I wanted a camera that I can carry with me all the time and I want it to be able to take good pictures in the meeting rooms without flash. A510 meets both of my needs.

Some meeting rooms are not well lit. I like to take lots of pictures, then choose the best ones out of them. (Most high end magazines choose one picture out of a thousand. That's my style.) So if I use flash, the room will be flashing like a news conference. They don't like it. If I don't use, I need a $1000 camera to get good pictures. But A510 gives me good indoor picture without flash.

This should provide enough of my impression of this camera. As for other features, other reviewers have already done a great job.
This camera is an overpriced POS.
Big performance for a little price
Wow!!!!!!!!! That would be my best description of this camera. I picked it up for $189 at Best Buy the other day and I can't stop taking pictures. I like how it has the simplicity to allow for point and shoot for the rookies, but also has manual controls for the more advanced shutterbugs. The picture quality is great, the flash is more than adequate, and the features are plentiful. This is a great beginner to intermediate camera that will still be relevant as your knowledge and skills in digital photography grow. The one thing I don't like is the delay when you press the menu or function button, it takes a second for the menu to pop up, whereas on my Konica Minolta DiMage xT, it's instantaneous. The cameras viewfinder is a bit on the small side as well, but that's not an issue for me as I don't use it ever. So all in all, great camera, great price, great quality.
Remarkable value at under $200.
A superb camera that yields brilliant pictures: This camera is simply stunning in both design and function. Also capable of taking digital movies. The camera conveniently takes two AA alkaline batteries; however (per the instruction manual) you'll get much longer battery life (per battery cycle) if you instead use rechargeable batteries. A 3.2 mega pixel digital camera (such as this one) is the ideal pixel size for almost all photography needs. For all of its many features and multiple shooting modes, at under $200 the Canon PowerShot A510 digital camera is a remarkable value.
Cute advanced 3 MP camera
This is my first digital camera.I took some 50 snaps out of this little camera. The pics came out crisp.
Pros:
1.4x zoom lens- more than enough for non-pro users.
2.Lots of features than the other cameras of this class.
3.Big 1.8 inch LCD screen.
4.Uses AA alkaline/NiMh batteries.
5.Color reproduction is really good.

Cons:
1.Flash recharging takes too much time , sometimes more than 3 secs.
2.The viewfinder is very small and the image looks blurred in its view.
3.AA alkaline batteries drain very quickly.
4.No internal memory and also only 16MB MMC card is supplied with the camera. That will hold only 8/9 pics in the highest resolution.
5.Images look dull in low-light.
6.Flimsy battery lid.

Although I have written more cons than pros , the camera is really cool out there in the 3MP class.Iwould recommend this camera to anyone. Also look out for the canon PSC-60 camera bag when u buy this camera which fits this camera fine.Definitely u need to buy an NiMh charger/batteries.

An excellent Camera at an Amazing Price!
This camera is an incredible value for the price.

Let me begin by saying that Canon makes exceptional digital cameras; the best in the market right now. This is because they have always used high quality components since they began manufacturing digital cameras. This one is no exception.

The Axxx series is the successor to the excellent Axx series, with a few very useful upgrades, such as the switch from 4AA to 2AA batteries (with no decrease in camera life!), and the 4x optical zoom.

A510 vs A520 vs SDxxx

First off, the A510 and A520 are identical except for the 3.2 megapixel sensor in the A510 and 4mp on the A520. Today, megapixel ratings are similar to Ghz ratings in the computer world: They used to mean a lot, but with today's cameras, it doesn't mean that much anymore. More megapixels do NOT mean a better image. They mean a larger printable image. In this case, the A510 has a maximum resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, or an 8.5x11 picture. The A520 has a max resolution of 2272x1704 pixels, or a picture slightly larger than 8.5x11.

Unless you need a slightly bigger picture, the A510 is a better buy.

When it comes to the Axxx or an SDxxx, it depends on what you need. The Axxx series will give you a better picture quality, manual controls, and standard AA batteries which actually last twice as long as the SDxxx series' proprietary batteries. The SDxxx series will give you better movies, the new Dig!c 2 processor, and a compact, cool looking camera, at a higher cost and with a very fragile exposed LCD screen.

Features:

Pros:
-Beautiful image quality, better than any other camera at this price range (no purple fringing like on the SDxxx)
-4x optical zoom! It's very hard to find another camera in this class. This alone makes the camera superior to most of the competition
-Excellent, intuitive manual controls
-Easy to hold naturally - no fingers in the way of the lens
-Beautiful 1.8 inch lcd that looks great under various lighting conditions
-The lcd is protected by a plastic layer, unlike the exposed and easily broken SDxxx lcds.
-Uses AA batteries, which are cheap and easy to find instead of expensive proprietary batteries
-Uses widely available and cheap SD or MMC cards (SD are faster)

Cons (most of these are minor quirks):
-Movie mode isn't as good as the SDxxx series
-Only USB 1.1 transfer speed (SDxxx have usb 2.0)
-Uses the still good, but outdated Dig!c processor, instead of the Dig!c 2 in the SDxxx series and some newer Canons
-A historical problem for Canons still shows in this camera in the flimsy battery/Memory card covers

If you do choose this product, the first thing you should buy is a larger SD memory card. The camera comes with a 16mb MMC card, which is pretty much useless. MMC cards are slower than SD, and 16mb will fill up very quickly.

You should also consider a case, such as the very affordable and custom fit PC-65.

Also, as with any camera, rechargeable NIMH batteries are a must. You don't need to pay for the expensive Canon set however, similar offerings from Energizer, Rayovac, etc. will work fine.
Are you kidding me, only $170 for all this?
I did countless hours of research on Digital camera's before settling on the A510. I can't stress enough how impressed I am with all of the A510's features for only $170. Picture quality is great, lcd viewer is easily viewable, multiple settings, and manual control of focus, exposure and shutter speed, plus movie mode!. Takes awesome pictures in near complete darkness (with flash on)...in focus and vibrant colors.
Cons: None really, considering the price but if I had a choice:; I would like the movie length to be only limited by the size of the sd card, instead of 3 minutes, also to be able to adjust zoom level in movie mode. However, I consider this a camera with the added bonus of 3 minute movies, if I had wanted something for movies more than pictures I would have purchased something else.
If you want an awesome digital camera at a lower -end price...look no further, you can find cheaper, but not with these features and quality.
The best camera in this class (Entry level camera)
In the entry level class of digital camera, Canon A serie is the best for design, quality, feature and price.

Design - Canon redesigned the A serie to be smaller, lighter, thanks to the use of SD memory card and only 2 AA batteries instead of 4 previouly. The battery compartment allows the camera to be a little bit thicker on the right side and it allows you to have a firm grip on the camera with one hand. The shooting mode dial on the top of the camera allows you to switch modes quickly, no need to navigate thru menus to switch modes.

Quality - Even thought the camera body is plastic, I find the fit and finish excellent. And of course Canon legendary lens quality. Start up time seems faster than the previous A serie generation.

Features - Starting with a 4X optical zoom, most other brands give you only 3X optical zoom. The A510/520 gives you a full range of shooting modes (Full Manual, Semi Manual - Shutter & Aperture, Automatic, Presets), no other brands give you the manual mode. Macro mode can snap pictures as close as 2 inches. A wide range of accessories, particularly the external flash which allows to extend the flashlight to 30ft.

Price - The A510 is cheap for what it is capable of doing. I got mine for $160 at OfficeMax. Is it worth spending more to get the 4 megapixels A520? Not unless you want to print picture size bigger than 8x10.

So far my A510 takes very sharp pictures and I don't have any problems with this camera. An excellent price/value purchase.
Flash recycle way too long
I used this camera for 3 days, and returned it back (to Amazon) yesterday.
Why I returned it:
- Everytime you take a picture with flash, the camera displays the picture for 3 seconds, after which it goes blank for 8-10 seconds. You can not take another picture till that time.
- It takes 3-4 seconds to achieve focus

So imagine you're taking a picture of your kid cutting his birthday cake, and someone stepped right into your frame... you can not take another picture till 8-12 seconds until the flash is recharged, and it tries to focus again. By that time, the scene and moment are gone.

I used to own a Canon A75 before (and a Canon A70 before that), so I'm a hard-core Canon user. But I am very disappointed with this camera. I would advise folks to check other forums on digital camera sites and then decide if they want to buy this camera or not. The user reviews are not pretty.

Canon a510
I bought this camera of Amazon. When I received the camera, the box wasn't sealed. The camera is nice, and it does have a lot of options. The sad part was that when I received it, I received a damaged item because the camera kept telling me that the batteries are dead and it kept shutting off. Amazon sent me the replacement, so hopefully once ill receive the new one I will fully enjoy it.
Great starter camera
Given this camera is not as small as others, it offers great value for money in the starter camera genre. With a 4x optical lens and a 3.2mp resolution it gives me great pics for a fraction of the cost of similarly equipped smaller cameras.

This is a nifty little thing that you can carry around anywhere and snap pics with. The portrait function is especially nice. I've taken quite a few stills that came out awesome!
picture perfect
As I researched digital cameras I strongly considered the nikon d70 dslr, but since my primary goal was to have something with me as I travel around china I thought any dslr would be too bulky in comparison to a point and shoot. The canon a510 is a nice compromise for me in that it provides a number of options I'm only beginning to get into, in addition to the automatic mode in which most everything comes out surprisingly well.

The only time I've seen automatic mode not work well is when I've taken pictures of tall trees in the shade. It starts off light and then gets too dark as I reach the top of the tree with the lens. Once I learn to adjust settings manually that may change. I've actually taken pictures 20 feet away, down a hall, in total darkness, and with the flash you can't even tell the lights are off.

I'm turned off by the long wait I get between taking pictures, but have learned to minimize this by turning off the preview settings after each shot. Much of the wait is from the flash having to recharge, and even that can be turned off.

I routinely walk around and take over 100 pictures in about an hour, filling a 256 meg card much more easily than I expected. The battery life is good for at least a few hundred pics, though I usually rotate before then.

So overall it's a good camera for the price, with the only other small camera brand I'd consider right now being the Casio Exilim EX-S100 or a similar model. Remember that megapixels are largely insignificant, with higher numbers often meaning more noise. If you want anything better, go for a dslr (starting around a grand), you're unlikely to see a real difference in picture quality otherwise.
ok camera...rebate declined?!
I bought this with the iP4000R Wireless Photo Printer to get the $70 rebate for the 2 items together. I never got the rebate and after contacting Canon for a month they tell me they never got the box tabs. Of course I sent them with the rebate form. So now I have no boxes and no rebate. Very aggravating and disappointing!
great photos
once you learn the different settings, you can take great photos. I played around with this camera for the waterfall shots, got some great shots of my sister-in-laws waterfall. I also took some great shots of practice at the Indianapolis Speedway before the Indy 500. I had to set it for daylight and action. I did not mind having to set the settings, I am glad I bought it. I recommend buying a bigger sd card for this camera, becuase you will want to take more and more photos. I did not have to many problems with flash and shutter speed.the batteries I use are the rechargeable ones. I won't use straight batteries. take a chance learn this cool little camera. I used to own a Kodak dx4300 and I loved it, but this one is just as nice and the price was great.
Canon PowerShot A510 Digital Camera
This was my 1st digital camera and I was very pleased with how easy it was to use. The picture quality was great and I love the quality of the zoom. Some of the cameras we tried out at the store would blur when I zoomed in.

This is a great camera for the money.
Camera is okay for beginners and non computer literates
Canon cannot make a camera that is not proprietary to their lousy software. You must load up their software in order to get the pictures off the card or else buy a card reader. When you plug it in it launches the Canon ZoomBrowser software. This software in its latest versions above 5.0 has the following big drawbacks:

You do not see a Removable Media Drive like you do with cameras like those from Olympus. You also CANNOT...I repeat CANNOT copy the photos from the camera to any type of a non local hard drive using their terrible software or drivers which makes these horrible for a business environment because you must copy everything local and then manually move them around.

We already rolled these out at my employer or I would have suggested that all 13 of them that we purchased be sent back as junk.

As for the camera itself it is okay but I would personally never buy one.
I am returning mine--disappointed
After much research online I bought this for an upcoming overseas trip. I have several other digital cameras but wanted a small one w/ good optical zoom for the trip. Here is the problem--this camera takes WAY WAY WAY too long to power up between flash shots. It sometimes takes WAY too long between no-flash shots, and it sometimes simply freezes in lens-open position and must be turned off and on again. I bought a high speed write Panasonic SD card, so the problemis not a cheap SD card. I have tried using different and fresh batteries. Possibly, since it runs on 2 AA batteries, it is just underpowered for it's own engineering. Second problem, in a loud enviroment, such as live music, it is very difficult to know if the camera actually took a shot or not when the button was pressed. If you can't hear it's little beep or click, you cannot tell by a indicator light. And since it takes so long to get ready for the next shot, you just don't know if you are actually getting the picture or not. When it does take a shot, the outdoor pictures looked good, but I found I missed as many shots as I got. Very frustrating. I took some no/flash shots at an indoor dance & live music event w/ this camera the first day and the pictures were so disappointing that I took my larger Toshiba M500 the next day. No comparison, same light,etc...but the photos the second day were great. Of course the Toshiba M500 and M700 are much bigger cameras, but I paid about the same for them as this Canon.

Great little pocket camera !!
All in all, this is a GREAT little camera ! It is really versatile (full AUTO to full MANUAL), inexpensive, excellent point and shoot quality, very small, and takes awesome pictures. It also is battery friendly and uses AA batteries.

I have bought numerous digital cameras and I love this one! I got this to throw in my pocket when I do not want to lug around my Fuji S7000.This camera is far superior to the Nikon Coolpix I bought for my wife as a point and shoot digicam.

Go buy one-you'll probably buy a second one for a family member as you will be so impressed by its quality and price. Way to go Canon !!
Go ahead and buy it
I just wanted a digital camera. Nothing too complex, but with enough features that once I got used to it, I could branch out to new things.
I shopped & shopped. Looked at about 100 or cameras online, read a ton of reviews, and asked friends who had cameras, and finally figured out want I wanted:

Point & shoot - a camera with which I could take basic family photos.
3+ megapixels - enough to get great resolution up to 8 X 10 prints, without having to pay a ton of money.
Features - but not so many options that I would have to take a class to figure it all out.
Hand friendly - small enough to carry along anywhere, but big enough that I didn't feel like a giant trying to operate tiny little controls.

Well, this camera was absolutely perfect. I took my first picture approximately 5 min. after opening the box. Literally put in the batteries and memory card, turned on the power, and hit the shutter. My first attempt at downloading photos to my computer would have been flawless if I had ony remembered to actually turn the camera on. (pesky little details)
The pictures are the best I have ever taken, were incredibly easy to take, and I haven't even begun to explore the possibilities. For the price, which was phenomenal, I am more than pleased. And I didn't have to hang around Best Buy for hours waiting on some teenager with angst. Double bonus!
Great Camera!
I looked at MANY point and shoot digital cameras and had the following criteria:
-pocket size
-take AA batteries
-optical zoom at least 3X (this camera 4X)
-video capture with sound
-solid build quality
-feels good in hands
The Canon A510 met ALL of my requirements. This camera takes GREAT pictures and is very easy to operate (AUTO setting). For the more advanced users, this camera also offers many manual controls....AA's go rather quickly. Buy rechargeable NIMH AA's.
Highly recommended.
Great Camera if your subject is standing still
If you are taking pictures of babies, pets, or anything else that is not stationary and will not pose on demand, you might want to consider another camera. I am not a camera guru, so this is not a factor I even considered when purchasing. I read the online reviews and they were all good so I went with it. Some had mentioned slow shutter speed, but I figured since I wasn't a fan of NASCAR this would not be a problem. You don't know slow shutter speed until you've experienced it, and you will experience it with this camera.
Works for me
This is my second digital camera (my first being the canon a300)
So from my first camera this one adds allot more manual controls, and a nice lens with optical zoom.
Side note: the fact that the flash zooms in as the lens does is a great feature.
Ok the first thing I noticed with this camera is the pictures come out much nicer than my first camera even though they are both 3.2mp. I bought it with a 512mb card and have yet to fill the card up before dumping to my computer (I estimate it'll hold about 600.)
Anyone that knows anything about digital cameras knows your standard one use AAs won't last long, when I got this camera I put the batteries that came with it in a remote control that was laying around and loaded the camera up with 2500mAh rechargeables. They last through multiple hundreds of pictures(with the LCD on) and many times of loading to the computer.
The key to great pictures with any digital camera is to learn the camera, how does someone expect to get great pictures out of something they don't know how to use, I've taken over 3,400 pictures so far with my a510 and it's perfect
People talk about shutter lag; all automatic cameras of any kind have that, for great pictures learn how to use manual mode. Adjusting your F stop, Iso, and shutter speed so you get a combination that works for the situation.
As far as durability I haven't dropped it yet (give me time, it's only been a few months) but this camera lives in my pocket without a case and it hasn't given me a single problem. (by lives I mean whenever I'm outside my house this camera is with me in my pocket, every time)
In conclusion this is a great camera. Trust me I've taken over 13,000 pictures since my first digital camera. And I highly recommend this one.
UPDATE 7/18/2005:
I recently purchased the lens adaptor and a .48x wide and a 2x tele lens. Once you buy that adaptor you have a 52mm thread that now lets me use any 52mm accessory (filters, lenses, etc.)
And I found out that having this adaptor on the front of the camera gives you a second handhold (with or without a lens on it) so I can now hold the camera somewhat like a SLR and get steadier shots. And even if you're not using a lens you can just put a UV filter on the front and now your lens is always encased and protected. This is an accessory I recommend getting.
That link up there has even more pictures now and the most recent ones are shot using the new lenses. (every photo since "cookie?" has been shot with this camera)
I'm up to about 5600 shots with this camera so far! Working great!
Love this Camera!!
I have has this camera for about a month and feel I have understood it well enough to write a reiew. For the price(I got it from Dell for about $150), I think it is a great digicam. Auto mode works great for Daylight shots and I have not noticed any sort of blur even at full zoom. However for low light shots, Auto mode seems to give underexposed photos, particularly if the subject is not well lit. I also experienced some focussing problems(nothing major)at full zoom. I think the best way to use it for low light shots is to use it in the manual model. By properly adjusting ISO and shutter speed I was able to take nice shots even in really dark situations without any blur or focussing problems. I found that an ISO of 200 and shutter speed of about 1/10 to 1/20 seconds works to get well exposed photos without blur in most low light situations(without tripod). The noise is really well controlled at 200 ISO. Also, center focus seems to work better and faster than the nine frame focus at night. The flash recycle is slow, perhaps due to the fact that it uses only 2 AA. I do not care about it a lot as I very rarely use the flash. Other than that the camera is just great(first digicam for me), and I am really happy with my choice. For this price tag and so many features, I think it is a really nice first choice.
Great Camera
Returned a Fuji (5.2megpix E510), for the Canon (A510 3.2 megpix). The cheaper Canon blows the Fuji away on sharpness / focusing and over all quality of the picture. Even when you push the zoom into digital zoom mode the picture quality is amazingly good.
I have used the camera in full optical-digital zoom, to capture high speed aircraft passes at airshows and the pics come out clear! Put it into continuous shot mode, hold down the shutter button to capture action frame by frame, works great, speed is fast.
The Fuji did not do that well too.
Batteries hold up great if you use hydrides!!!
I get over 200 pics easily between charges (if you are not a LCD 'on time' nut). Even if you use the LCD a lot they still hold up well compaired to any other digital cam I used. On top of that it only uses 2 batteries at a time. Buy the typical 4 'AA' NiMh's and you have a spare pair to carry with you.
Finally I have a digital camera that I really like to use, it's pocket sized small, takes better pics then anything Iused in the past (even a 5.2megpix!) and it does not break the bank. Only 2 complaints would be while in the live video capture mode you can not adjust zoom while shooting. You must adjust the zoom amount before you begin shooting. Also it seems you can not use this camera as a webcam.
Unbelievable!
I am not easy to please. Have had Olympus, HP and Kodak digicams all costing over $250 dollars and all very reasonable cameras. But along comes this little gem for much less and I am stunned! Besides having the 'feel' of quality in every way and logically accessible features that really do work, I just can't take a bad picture with this thing even when I try! Bottom line, when something is really good, it does not need a lot of explaining. So I won't. Just try it...you'll love it and I'll spend more time taking nifty pics instead of writing a review!
Worked great but broke quickly
The A510 comes as advertised. It's light weight, takes good pictures, and is easy to use. I thought the video capability worked surpisingly well. I owned it for a few weeks, taking a total of about 40 pictures before it broke. The camera would turn on and off but that was it. It just didn't work one day. I liked it enough to return for a new one. Hopefully I have better luck than the with the first one.
Great digital point and shoot camera
My wife was looking for some camera for her vacation. This camera fits the bill perfectly. It's small, uses standard battaries (can survive without a charger). 3M pixes helps pack more pictures into the same flash card, very good zoom and picture quality in it's class and the controls are very easy to learn. Some cameras may be better in some areas, but overall it's probably the best overall value without any clearly weak spots for this price.

Why would you ever consider other camera if this one is so neat? Well, personally the biggest issue it's too slow. Motorized zoom and shutter lag makes almost impossible to get a dance move, smile or that ocean wave you really want to catch. So if you kid is having a sport event, you'd still better get an SLR.
Great Digital Camera (for under $200)
This is my 3rd digital camera, purchased after my previous camera was lost. I got the A510 because all of the more expensive models didn't really satisfy my needs and wants - so if I was going to replace the camera in a year or two (when the new Canons, Nikons, or others catch up to my expectations of them), then why spend too many $$$ now? I wanted compactness & portability, point-and-shoot plus manual control capability, a longer optical zoom (more than 3X), a wide-angle that was really wide angle (at least 35mm using the old "35mm camera equivalent" scale). Also, I'm doing glorified snapshots of the family, so really high resolution and pixels were not so important to me; 3.2 Megapixels is enough. This Canon A510 met all of the above criteria, at a bargain price, and had the full manual operation capability (which is a bit rare to find) in case I ever wanted to get really serious about one or the other photo situation. It's big brother the A520 was overpriced for the amount of improvements it gave me. After purchase, I find that the A510 is basically "as expected; sometimes even better". I have not noticed any significant lag after shooting as others have reported, but then I am not doing action sports photos, and do have some good NiMH batteries. Things I would like to improve: (1) the zoom can be jerky at times (not so great for fast changes and action photos), (2) when the battery indicator starts to say "low" you are very nearly "inoperative", (3) in video mode the zoom and exposure are locked at the beginning and will not adjust during "filming" (a very common failing of still cameras doing video). Also, you do need to be careful with the little doors that cover the memory card and the batteries, since they are a bit fragile. They're plastic on metal hinges; abuse them, and they can break a bit too easily. (I have seen this, but not experienced it myself.) If your needs are like mine, then you should be very satisfied with this camera. I am.
Canon Powershot A510
I AM ENJOYING USING MY CAMERA....IT IS GREAT AND TAKING PICTURES IS NO LONGER PAINFUL WITH HAVING TO GET FILM DEVELOPED...WONDERING WHY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO PURCHASE ONE....IT'S GREAT
This camera gets an A+ for beginners!
My folks wanted a digital camera but are not technology saavy people. Also, they are getting up there in age and not enthused about taking alot of time to learn something new. I did a lot of research and found that the Canon A510 got high marks on both the quality of pictures and the ease of use. So we took a chance and bought on for my folks. I am impressed! I was able to load the batteries and the memory card and show my folks a few basics to get them off and running. They are able to take clear, vibrant pictures without any hassle. (For the first time ever, my mom hasn't cut heads off of any of her photo subjects!) I have shown them how to upload their photos and my dad has been e-mailing pictures to all his relatives. I was so impressed that I bought one for myself and have been having a blast! I have taken short videos of my puppy with it and some fantastic action shots of him and was able to create a little video of the photos and movie set to music with the Zoom Browser software that came with the camera. Next week I might even open the instruction manual to see what else can be done....so far the interface has been intuitive enough that I haven't even opened the plastice bag the manual came in. The pictures printed off my folks plain laser jet printer look fabulous! If you are a beginner and not looking to print wall sized photos with a lot of fancy stuff, this camera is a perfect start!
Great Camera
Overall this is a great camera. It has all the settings of a regular 35mm camera, so your picture-taking can get pretty advanced; and it's great just pointing and shooting as well. This is my first digi cam and I'm very pleased with it; however, I was surprised at how quickly it sucked up the batteries if it was on for a long period.
This is a great camera!
This camera is easy to use and very versitile! The only thing I would recommend is to purchase larger memory so the camera can take/store more pictures.
My first digital camera
After watching all of my friends trade in their analog cameras for digital, I decided to jump on the bandwagon. Considering Canon was my favorite make of 35mm cameras, I looked at it first and wound up getting it.

The 510 is small enough to put in a pair of pants (I've heard Nikons are bulkier), uses industry standard memory cards, and works well with iPhoto on the Mac. I find the use of AA batteries a big plus, considering they are readily available should the ones in there die. The zoom is good, but the best part is the flash. I can be in a very dark room and still get a great picture that looks as if all the lights were on.

Despite having only 3.2 megapixels, the photos are very sharp. Given the price this would make an excellent camera for just about anyone. It's a good idea to get a case with this so the screen doesn't get scratched and a few AA batteries can be toted around just in case.
Good value for General Photography
PowerShot A510 gives most of what you expect from a digital camera for a lesser price. Since it runs on 2 AA batteries you don't have to worry too much about batteries. Of course you are better off using AA rechargebles if you want to save a little money on batteries !
great camera...as reviewed by others
i read all the reviews on this and many other digital cameras, here on amazon and other sites, and am very pleased with my purchase. it doesn't seem to have any drawbacks as yet. excellent little camera.
happy customer
I got this camera two days before leaving on vacation. Never had or used a digital camera before. Quick look through manual and I could use it no problem.(Used auto feature.) Pictures came out great. I was afraid of them coming out blurry with being my first time with camera, but no problem. Im now ready to learn and use other features. Next camera I will probably go with a higher optical zoom but for first camera I'm very happy.
Nice Camera
I bought this camera as a gift rcommended by an owner. For the money you can't beat it. It is easy to operate, light, comfortable in the hand, and best of all uses AA batteries. The results are great, especially for recreational use.
Canon A510 digital Camera
This camera is everything I hoped it would be. Easy for my wife to use in the automatic mode with enough optional settings to allow me to take pictures in unusual situations. The picture quality is excellent for 3.2 megapixels
Maybe for a first camera, but not for a second...
I have owned a Powershot S200 for some years and loved it, but it finally gave up. I thought the A510 would be an upgrade...it is not. It is just as heavy and quite a bit larger. Night shots are very difficult to get right, and you can not trust the auto mode. It also has a less sturdy feel to it. Well I'm gpnna keep it but am certainly disappointed. As a first digital camera it is probably great, but if you are used to digital and are looking for an upgrade, this is probably not for you.
not again
Well, we are on our third Powershot of the same model. The first one was stolen and the next two broke within 2 weeks of having them. First it started by not turning on, then we would change the batteries and it would work for a few pictures, then the lens wouldn't open all the way! What a pain! I'm glad to see so many others are happy and not having this problem, but I think its time for me to try a different camera.
Great price, great camera
I've been very impressed so far with all the features that I've used - the optical zoom that allows the extreme close-up shot without fuzziness, the quickness of how it's ready to take the photo in less than 2 seconds after turning it on, the easy shutter menu for which I haven't had to read the manual yet. But to get to all the other features, I will have to read it... soon! Until then, I'm having fun playing with my camera! And the best part was the great deal - I haven't found this camera for less anywhere else.
great product
I purchased this camera because we were going on a Caribbean cruise. With a separately purchased 512 MB SD card, we took over 200 photos in various conditions. Many different environments - beaches, sunsets, casinos, jungles - the colors and clarity of the images are great! Camera is easy to use, and I'm a novice photographer. I've experimented with the different settings and used the owner's manual with results that I'm very happy with. This is a great product for a first time digital camera buyer (like me!)
WORST CAMERA EVER
Eats rechargeable batteries very fast - takes about 7 pictures before camera dies. And when it dies, the zoom does not retract. Very frustrating camera.
Amazing value for the price
This is the best entry-level digital camera on the market, bar none. Multiple shooting modes, manual controls, & a 4X optical zoom in a body small enough to carry in your pants pocket. All for less than $200. Sure it takes forever to save a flash photo, battery life isn't all that great, the icons on the body wear off with use, it may ask you to set up the time & date constantly - but the color & sharpness of the photos make it all worthwhile. I've taken digital pix with cameras ranging in price up to $500 & yet none of my landscapes look any better than what I've shot on my last two trips with the A510. If you're mostly shooting indoors & using the flash all the time, than this isn't for you (try one of the Canon SD models), but otherwise save some money & snap this up.
Nice Camera!
This is a very easy to use, nice camera for beginners and amateurs and also for the price. It takes quality pictures and since it's a Canon, it's a good quality camera! I would recommend it anyday...but it takes a lot of battery power. I would recomend you buy rechargeable batteries to use with it cos it's a "Powershot"....it literally uses up power! Other than that though, its a very good camera.
Good picture quality but slow
I had minolta dimage before this. And i got this after that with more pixels and zoom. The quality of picture are no doubt great . Canon knows what they are making . The only cons i have found so far is slow shutter speed. It takes long time to store picture (upto 4 sec). Which is some time frustrating in parties? You wait to get ready for another picture. The click button is lot of time slow too, you need to push it hard to make it work.
I hope this helps user to pick right camera.
Great Pix
For a camera with only 3.2 megapix it takes excellent shots and is easy to use especially in auto mode. Only major negative is camera advises 'change batteries' incorrectly after only a few uses (eg if use flash or lcd screen a lot) - if let camera rest for a minute ur two, batteries are fine. But overall, for a small, pocket sized camera, it would be hard to beat picture quality or price.
Canon Powershot A510
Item arrived promptly and in excellent condition. Have tried the camera, and am very pleased.
great camera
Very satisfied with the product. Has the right mix of features for the user who wants just a bit more than "point and shoot" (although it takes great "point and shoot" pics, too!) at a reasonable price.

Solidly built. Intuitive interface.

The prints I've done so far at 10x15 have been of excellent quality.

When you are thinking of adding a memory card, consider that at the typical setting each pic averages under 1MB. The video capability (good for e-mails) will fill a card fast. At 640x480 it will use up 48MB a minute, and at 320x240 (better for mails) it's 24MB a minute.

Canon A510 DigiCamera
This little gem does all that is promised and comes with an excellent manual that makes it all possible.
Wonderful First TIme Digital Camera
This is the first digital camera I've ever owned and this one came ready to use right out of the box. Very easy to understand settings. Handels very well. I'm not much on using manuels but the one that comes with this is very clear. I've just been playing around with it for the past month and I get clear great pictures. You can edit photos right in the camera. I have an apple mac with iphoto and the camera works great with that setup as well. I would definately recommend this camera to my friends.
Man, do I love this camera!
This is the best camera I've ever owned!
Here's the strong points:

- Great pictures!
- I've always had problems with the "push the button halfway down to focus" and watch for lights. This gives you a tone so you don't have to bother with lights so you can focus on taking the picture.
- Great that you can have the camera automatically set the settings, or manually adjust individual ones if you want.
- Great for Panoramics. The included software does a great job stitching, provided you have a common element to use.
- Great price for what you get!

Canon paid attention to detail, and did a nice job making this camera!
I gave a gift that made me very happy, with this camera...
I immediately received very nice quality experimental shots and videos from my daughter. I included a 512MB card for video and the camera comes with a card that's a good size for snapshots.

The video quality is very nice, as is the sound on that. She's had it for nearly a month, done a lot of shooting, including night shooting with it, and it's still going strong on the original AA batteries. Battery cost and battery availability have to be serious considerations in a camera that goes everywhere with you.

The automatic features are good ones, and can be overcome for more creative work. It's a good buy for the money. I'm getting two more.
WAIT - Please Read This Review BEFORE you Buy the Canon A510/A520
I frequent photo forums since digital photography is my hobby and I wanted to be sure that anyone who is looking to buy the Canon A510 or A520 in the near future knew that the NEW MODELS (Canon A610/A620)are debuting on October 10, 2005 ! Technically, Canon is calling them the replacement for the A95. However, since no direct replacement were announced for the A510/A520 (and simply by looking at the New Model Numbers), it's safe to assume that the NEW Canon A610/A620 were meant to replace the A510/A520 as well. Btw, you can see the specs for those on my favorite photo site-
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0508/05082202canona610a620.asp.

To summarize, the Biggest Improvement will be the incorporation of the DIGIC II Processor to reduce the shutter lag between shots. I have personally owned the Canon A520 and whilst I love its size, image quality, and use of 2 "AA" batteries, it was WAY TOO SLOW! So Slow, that I found it unuseable. The new models will be heavier since they will use 4 "AA" Batteries for additional POWER. But I think you will agree with me that the addition of Two "AA" batteries is a small price to pay for Faster Speed and More Features! Finally, the A610 will cost $299 and the Whopping 7 MP (!) A620 will cost $399. SO, if you are in the market for the Canon A95, you just might want to wait 'til after October 10, 2005 before you make your decision. If you can't wait, then I would recommend that you buy the A95 instead of these cameras.
My Camera Rocks!
I love it! It works very well except the batteries run out fast.
BUYER BEWARE...
I have been a film photographer for about 30 years and dabbled with digital for about the past 5 years. Recently, I decided to dive in completely. The challenge was to satisfy both high and low end requirements and to enable printing WITHOUT having to connect to a computer.

Here's what I bought for my wife and kids:
-A510
-Epson PictureMate Deluxe

Here's what I bought for me:
-350D (Rebel XT) with all the gismos (battery grip, filter, extra batteries, chargers, etc).

We purchased the A510 for low end usage. And while the A510 has nearly as many options as the 350D, it can be 'automated' for everyday use. Because it comes with only a 16MB card, you will need to visit every menu option to select the appropriate defaults for your usage (most of ours is just for 4x6 prints). Once you've done that, I suggest simply keeping it on the AUTO or P modes for everything. The 2 main differences between AUTO and P is that AUTO selects the ISO (with P, you set it) and always uses a flash if needed (with P, you can turn off the flash). In any case, the A510 is compact (fits in a purse), light (only uses 2 AA batteries) and does not burn through batteries like I've seen some other digitals do (but you will still need a battery charger - I suggest using NiMH instead of NiCd). The autofocus is smart and the images are noise free (even at ISO 400). Bottom Line: if this is your low end, every day family camera, it's perfect; there is no need to wait for the 'next' version. In fact, I would recommend jumping on this model as you will probably find good prices while they phase it out.

As for the Epson printer and the 350D, they are working out as well (but not the subject of this review).

Here is the BUYER BEWARE part (and the part Amazon will probably remove from this review). I still have not received the camera from Amazon. Because it was taking them so long to ship it (as of this writing it has been 13 days and delivery is not expected for 4 more), I ordered it elsewhere (and even saved another $25).
excellent camera with one major problem
The PowerShot is an excellent camera, and initially I was very pleased with it. I had no problem getting crisp pictures that looked exactly like I wanted them to, regardless of lighting or movement.

However, after having owned the camera for only a few weeks, the shutter that covers the lens has jammed and I can't open it. Meaning that I can't take any pictures. At all. This happened to someone else I know with the same camera. I have absolutely no idea how or why this occurred, nor do I have any idea how to fix it. I also, unfortunately, have no idea if this will happen to you. I would still recommend this camera because, as far as I can tell, the jamming of the shutter was a fluke and otherwise it's an ideal camera for a photographer who likes to use both point-and-shoot and the various manual options. But be warned that there is the possibility that the shutter will jam and your camera will not work any more.
Outstanding Camera Especially for the Price
This camera is simple to operate once you have read the manual. The only minor downside is that you have to purchase another memory card as the one provided with the camera has very little memory.
Camera was delivered within six days of purchase.
Thanks Amazon............

review
The only complaint I have is the slow shutter speed with the flash. It's slower than my old canon which is embarrassing . Over all the pictures are great and quality is good. The card that comes with it is useless since it will not hold many pictures on high resolution. Also shouldn't a camera come with a storage bag, may be a simple one at least. Another problem I have noted once is that when the battery died (no warning) the lens did not retract and stayed that way until new batteries were inserted.

great camera for real estate but not for personal life
This camera takes awesome quality pictures. I'm a realtor I use this camera mainly for shooting homes. It gives me professional image quality for work, but I tried taking pictures after work, portraits shooting & it's too slow for portrait taking. the capture is slow & if using the flash it takes the camera a while to reset itself, so by the time you take the shot, your subject moves your end picture is blurred. So I only think if you are taking pictures that are not moving or have your subjects stand there like a rock you're fine. Otherwise get another camera.
Excellent DigiCam for an average amateur photog
This camera takes fabulous pics, has good battery life, is very easy & intuitive to use, and expansion memory cards for it (SD) are very inexpensive these days -- definitely need to get one, though, as it comes with only a 16MB card. It's not the tiniest camera around, but small enough to fit in an evening bag/small purse when I go out with friends. I am 100% satisfied with this purchase!
Shutter jams
I bought this for my son and within a few days, the shutter jammed. He was still able to use the camera by manually pushing the shutter open. He really liked it except for the shutter problem, until he dropped it in the river. He is waiting for it to dry out. If it survives this, I'll change the rating.
The best digital camera I've used
I have used several digital carmeras, trying them out before I bought one. I have a $600.00 35mm Cannon that I love, and my new Cannon A510 shoots pictures as clear with as high difintion as my $600.00 35mm. And now I don't have to carry extra film and a 3lb camera.
Fine camera
fine entry level camera. I was up and running taking pictures
5 minutes after I received it.
CANON BUYER BEWARE!
I have just been told that my camera will not be repaired under its warranty. It was purchased the last week of June, used to take over 700 pictures/video and then 6 1/2 weeks after purchase, would not take photos. After calling the service number and trying various suggested things, I sent it to their service center for repair. Two weeks later, I received a BILL for $108.00 with a note that the repair would be done after they received payment! When I called, they said it had impact damage - I was surprised, since I had not noticed any damage before I sent it (and I knew I had not dropped it.) I asked for photos of the damage and was astonished to see the condition it was in. They flatly deny that anything happened to it there and still refuse to repair it without being paid. I checked on this site and found four other people (reviews dated 9/11, 9/6, 8/16 and 6/28)who had the same sort of problem with their A510: it quit taking pictures.

So, while I loved it all 6 weeks it worked, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a camera that may only work for a few weeks and then won't be repaired by the company.
Good Features
This camera has very good features for the novice and for the more experienced photographer. I love having the movie clip feature and black and white options and sepia.

Batteries have been a problem for me. Rechargeables don't last very long. I have bought lithiums but haven't tried them out yet. I beleive this is a problem with digitals in general, not particulary just this camera.

I would recommend this camera to all interested in purchasing.
Canon digital camera
This is the first product I have purchased from Amazon.com. Ordering it on-line probaly saved us $60 because there was no sales tax to pay and the shipping was free. I really like the camera. The pictures we have taken are very good. This is my first digital camera so I am learning how to use it.
Perfect First Digital Camera
My wife and I have never owned a digital camera and this one is perfect for us. It's small, uses AA batteries instead of a fancy camera battery, has a movie feature, and a large display screen. Make sure you buy a memeory card with the camera, though, because the one it comes with only holds 16-17 pictures. Also, if you use the camera a lot, turning it on and off, it goes through batteries pretty quickly. It only needs two at a time and AA are cheap, though, so this was not a problem for us. And the "slow shutter speed" talked about in other reviews has not been a problem either. I don't feel like it's any slower than any digital camera I've used before. Overall, a good buy (for the price especially!)
Canon Power Shot
Seems to work as described. No problems to date. I am happy with product.
Nice photos, love the movie feature
I'm pretty sold on Canon for digital camera's. I was delighted when I saw this camera at a good price. The ability to make little movie clips is great. I bought a couple Canon 110's for work and I love them too. The A510 has a better zoom, (4x vs. 2x), and works on regular AA batteries. I believe you can even change lenses. I probably won't, but that seems like a nice feature. I suggest getting a bigger memory card, (generic brands are fine), and a rechargable battery pack. A case is nice too. The Canon case is good quality and pretty cheap.

The things I don't like are the slightly larger size of this camera. It's small, but not as small as the 110. which is like a pack of cards. I also prefer the 110's metal case. It seems more rugged.
great little camera
Everything I was looking for. Good price, great features, and really good photos. What more could you ask for?
Manual
Camera is light, small, and takes very good pictures. However, the manual is difficult to follow. I know I could do it much better.
Excellent product for the price
Camera is easy to use; Amazon did a very good job in delevering the product in a timely manner - keeping me informed till the product arrived at my doorstep. I highly recommend this product for the person who wants a good small digital camera that takes decent pictures.
Great first digital camera!
This camera is an excellent value. If you are a beginner, or even if you aren't, it has plenty to offer. Beginners have plenty of automatic options, but also the opportunity to try manual and more advanced functions without getting completely overwhelmed. Yet although the $199 retail price makes it a great value, keep in mind you will most likely be spending more to get a much bigger memory card than the one provided, a charger with rechargeable batteries since this camera eats up AAs like Cookie Monster eats Chips Ahoy, and a protective camera case. (These are the only reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.)Still, this is my first digital camera, and I know there is no need to move on to a more expensive one until I have mastered one like this. And from what I have read, it is probably the best in its class.
Great camera for everyday use
It's a great camera. It focuses and takes pictures quickly, one of my biggest complaints with the four-year old Minolta Dimage that it replaced. Good colors and exposure, a bit weak in low light indoor shots without flash, but still better then my old camera. When taking pictures with straight lines near the edge of the lens, it tends to curve the subject more then I would have expected... but that is my only complaint.

It has a really amazing value for cost ratio in my books - worth every penny!
CANON IS TOPS IN CONSUMER REPORTS TWO YEARS IN A ROW
WORKS FINE, LOTS OF INSTRUCTIONS, GOOD PICTURES, STILL WORKING OUT HOW TO STORE FOR EMAIL, PRINTER DOES SOME STRANGE THINGS
Lots of Fun!
The camera is barely usable right out of the box because of brief battery life (like ALL digital cameras) and small memory card, but they really aren't big issues.
- The batteries are just regular AA size, so you can replace them easily with rechargable nickel metal hydride ones for about $6. The NiMH batteries last forever!
- The 16MB memory card included is not proprietary, its just off-the-shelf SD memory (which is the least expensive kind) so its easily upgradable. I got a 256MB card for $18.
The software included is super easy to use. The "stitch" function of the camera is a BLAST! especially at parties.
Digital zoom (on any digital camera) is horrible, but this little gem has a nice 4X optical zoom that actually works.
The movie function really works well also. It has built-in mic and speaker which is very nice. Many cameras don't though, so watch out (Who would want a movie without sound???).
I've had it for about 3 months now, and use it about every other day. It's a lot of fun, no problems, an excellent value.
PowerShot A510 a sure winner
I was looking for an inexpensive digital camera for everyday photos. I had to look no further than the A510.

In June '05 my 19 yr old daughter wanted to buy a camera to take to college. She did her research and cost/featured compared. She hit on the A510. We used it all summer at softball and soccer tournements across the midwest, parties at home, and her out with friends.

Not being a technical shutterbug, all I can say is it takes GREAT pics of all kinds: indoors, outdoors, sports action, fireworks, portraits... all with a simple change of the dial then point and shoot! And it couldn't be easier transfering the shots to our laptops with the included software.

When it came time for the family to replace our camera, it was a no brainer (and at the great price Amazon offered by opening an amazon credit account it was a steal!).

Just be sure to have extra batteries or buy a rechargable package because you find yourself taking so many shots the juice goes fast.
Wonderful Wonderful Camera
Without getting into it, this camera is great to use, I bought it based on a reccomendation from my family. I added a greater chip, bought some good batteries, and the camera is great. It does all and more that I need it to. There is NO REASON to get anything higher than a 3.2.
Best Value for the money!
This is a great little camera for all around use. It has all the options of the big SLRs, except for the mega zoom potential. I just recently logged onto digicamhelp.com, where they give you tons of information. This little camera is a great one to learn the finer points of picture taking, or just use the auto focus. It has pre-set "scene" modes for taking pictures of foliage, fireworks, kids and pets,(constantly moving), "indoors" regulates exposure to avoid the use of too much flash power,(this has always been one of my pet peeves). And a few others like "beach", "snow" and "underwater". I have used a few of the scene modes, and they are pretty much right on - it's amazing. But, unless I'm in an "ARTFUL" mood and want to experiment with some of the settings, I'm usually lazy and just put it on auto focus for family get togethers. The pictures are amazing and I'm so glad I bought this little camera. I say little because, while it's not as small as the Cannon SD series, it will fit nicely in my purse, and the case that is offered in accessories is purfect, and looks very nice. There are still many things I haven't tried, but I'm experimenting with it every day, in order to feel comfortable enough with it to use some of the more complicated settings and special effects in those situations where I have to act fast to get those great shots. Life is short, it's so nice to have pictures to remind us of the good times. The first thing my grown kids do when they come for a visit is get out the photo albums. This is a great camera for the money - you can't go wrong!
So much better than my last digital camera...
....which was a Casio EX-Z3 that barely made it through the 1 yr. warranty period before crapping out (and they wanted $199 to fix it). The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I haven't learned to use ALL the options....but I was "up and running" within a few minutes with the quick start directions. (hint: purchase bigger memory card and rechargeable batteries, don't even stop to consider this....)

This camera is for "regular" people: family pics, vacation, etc. I've used the Macro setting numerous times for detail shots of small items. The camera links effortlessly to iPhoto - just connect the cable to your keyboard USB port and "ta da"! The Casio had several steps and took quite a few gyrations before it actually downloaded the pics. The ONLY thing I liked better on the other camera was the larger LCD screen...
DISAPPOINTED
I travel a lot and just need a camera that will shoot when I push the freakin' button.
I switched from a Fuji 1400Z, and was very disappointed in waiting for the Canon A510 flash to cycle.
I sold it and went back to a 4 AA-battery camera; Olympus D-490.

Lens barrier trouble!
My A510 will not open the lens barrier all the way when the power is turned on. I sent it to Canon under warranty and it was returned to me with the same problem only worse. Last (and only) Canon for me. Returned to Canon again but it's still not working.
Canon PowerShot A510 is awesome!
This is a GREAT little camera for recreational users. We bought it for our daughter's 13th birthday and she is having a lot of fun with the video feature as well as taking photos. The camera is very easy to operate and takes great shots. I would highly recommend this camera for any recreational user.
Magnifica Camara
Love my camera!
I'm not a professional photographer. I just wanted a camera that would take a very good photo of travel, grandkids, dogs, etc. I got that and so much more. Love the camera and would recommend it to anyone.
GREAT ALL AROUND CAMERA.
The main reasons for purchasing this Canon A 510 was the extra power of the zoom lens and the versatility of choice in settings. This camera has enough settings and adjustments to satisfy most any need. On the other hand, the dial can be left on "Auto" all the time and excellent results may still be expected. The 3.2 MP rating is more than adequate for any snapshot or email use. One suggestion is to use Energizer NiMH rechargeable batteries rated at 2500 mAH. Sure to please.
Compact and Perfect!
We bought this little palm size camera for our office and it is wonderful and easy. We love it for a small office, we don't take a ton of photos but they have great clarity and great picture quality.
I love the picture quality and easy use
Before I bought this camera I was careful to shop around for the best in this price range. I noticed the good reviews for this camera so I purchased it. I am very happy with it. It is perfect for the everyday pictures that I take. The camera is compact and easy to use and the picture quality is great.
Nice camera
I gave this camera as a gift to my mother for her 60th birthday, and she loves it. Very simple to use, takes great pictures, and runs on AA batteries. The only drawback I have seen is the lag time from the time you press the button to take the picture to the time the camera is ready to take another picture (only a couple seconds, though). This camera made a great gift!
Best digital camera ever
This is 3rd digital camera I have had, it is the best, easy to use and understand, great zoom and clear pictures. Only draw back is batteries dont last long if using it alot, or doing a video, but thats no problem.
Good Shots but Some Functions not as Expected
This was my first digital camera. I did about 8 hours of study before I decided on it. As an amatuer, it pretty much does what I expected. I got very good quality shots, after I studied the options--there are a lot. I also get some snap-shot quality photos. The 100% automatic setting does not always get the white balance (sun light/florescent/light bulbs/etc) correct and it does not allow the "super fine" density setting. I want the super fine so that I can get the sharpest photos. It works better to use the mostly automatic "P" setting and choose your own white balance and density. The manual focus does not work well though one internet review said it was one of the few manual focuses that did work. But the automatic focus usually gets it right, which is what I really want. We got a 250MB memory card which gives us about 150 shots--plenty to take several shots at one time and insure I get a great picture. But with the best quality settings, I have to wait a few seconds to take follow-up shots. I recommend that you get a AC converter. The manuel warns of potential problems if the batteries die while down loading photos. Good rechargable NiMH batteries have worked well and have saved us a lot of expense.
good item for easy use
good price, very useful, hand carry ok
but slow sutter, dark lense
now sertisfy
Excellent camera
Excellent camera, especially for a college student like me. Excellent quality, nice and compact, all at a good price. Perfect for digital photo editing and design.
Received two defective units
I purchased this camera because of its high ratings, but after one day, the lens cover began sticking. I returned it for a replacement. One day after receiving the replacement, the problem surfaced on the second unit. Canon needs to fix this problem.
It's okay
I don't really have much to compare this to, but I like it well enough. It confuses me at times, but we mostly get along.

My main complaint is that the delay (or whatever you call how long it takes between clicking the button and actually taking the picture) is REALLY long, particularly right after you turn it on.

Maybe I'm impatient, but I have thought that the camera isn't working a couple times because it took so long to take the picture.
Canon A510 "service"
Bought the camera as a gift. My son-in-law used it less than three weeks and it would not turn on. He is in Iraq and sent it home. I contacted Canon and sent it in. The turn around time was less than two weeks. It works now but they scratched it badly around the screws used to disassemble the camera and added an extra one on the display for free. Poor, poor repair. Just beware of Canon "service". I'm a long time Canon user myself and own 7 film and digital cameras and have had good luck with all of them but be very afraid of their "service".
fantastic camera
This model was recomended to me by a worker at Wolf/Rita Camera when I asked for the cheapest in price best quality camera for 4x6 prints and possibly 5x7's. I get clear pictures in 4x6, 5x7 , and 8x10. They are as good as a regular camera. The video option records well too with nice vibrant colors. The audio is okay but then again you are buying a camera not a camcorder. I would buy another Canon again in a minute if I ever needed to replace this one for some reason.
Great camera, a little slow, not so great on batteries
I've had this camera for a couple of weeks now. I have taken close to 300 pictures with it, bounced it around in my pocket and my gym bag, and dropped it in the snow. It has performed flawlessly.
I am using standard alkaline AA batteries and a Kingston 512MB SD card.
On best-quality shooting mode, my jpg file sizes are running from about 1MB to just under 2 MB.
My previous camera was a Canon A60, which was a little heavier and a little bigger than this A510.

So far, here's my opinion of A510:
GOOD:
-Pretty rugged
-Great pictures
-I really like the 4X zoom instead of 3X
-larger LCD screen is a nice addition
-SD card instead of a CF card is nice too - smaller
-very inexpensive for what it can do
NOT SO GOOD:
-Battery life - I have yet to get 100 shots on a pair of batteries. I hardly ever had to think about batteries with the A60 (it had 4 AA's), but I'm finding that I do need to keep it in mind with the A510.
-I think that the cycle time from picture to picture is noticeably longer with this camera. I almost always use the video display while shooting, and it generally takes about 4 to 5 seconds between shots. Maybe it's my SD card, maybe it's my batteries, or maybe it's the camera - but I wish I could shoot a little faster.
SUMMARY:
I recommend it - but carry spare batteries and be patient between shots.
Sloooow. No good for kids photos.
Did extensive research before we bought this camera, so surprised and disappointed. Might be OK for static subjects, but we bought to take photos of our kids, and this is just no good for that. The shutter lag is interminable, and thus we never get the shot we want, even when set at the kids and pets setting.
We put a rubber band around our old Nikon Coopix 1000 and are using that again. Much quicker. Who needs all those pixels for snapshots unless you're printing large photos. With the 1 megapixel you get thousands of photos on a small memory card, and the photos send much quicker via email/web.
If you're shooting kids, don't waste your money - save up until you're ready to spend enough to get a camera with no shutter lag -- and be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars on memory cards.
Very Good Camera
A good picture quality, good video, easy to use, compact, Cheap, only need 2 batteries, 4x optical zoom, I recommend 2 Ni-mh Batteries and a Secure Digital Card of 128MB or more
Great little camera.
This camera took great shots and was easy to use. I liked the large LCD screen and the settings available.

I would definitely recommend getting another memory card (or two or three) because the one included only allows about 20 photos at the best resolution, and rechargeable batteries are a must.

One thing I didn't care for was the slow shutter lag. At least to me, it seemed slower than other cameras I've had. It was frustrating to take pictures of my dogs or my child because they'd have already moved by the time the camera responded.
good pictures battery life way too short
I love the picture quality, however, the batteries don't last long at all. Also, the zoom feature is a little on the slow side.
Possible design/QC problem
A good camera for the money. There are two other complaints noted here besides mine on failure of the lens open/close/cover mechanism.

Mine failed after a few hundred shots. Lens froze almost completely closed with cover partially open. Contacted Canon, returned camera as directed with form they sent over email for in-warranty repair. Camera was returned in about two weeks with optical unit and cover replaced and working fine. Satisfactory service.

Save your receipt, warranty and other forms that come with the camera, and register the camera. If you have a problem, contact Canon service on line and you won't even need to call them. They have a form on their site for these situations. Worked great for me.

As for the camera, it's a superb buy for a beginner. My 9 year old grandson has no problem because of the AUTO dial setting.

Yes, the recycle time is more than a second, but the price is also a great deal lower than the SLRs that recycle almost instantly. You just need to learn to anticipate, and compose your shots well so one every five or so seconds is enough. If that's a real problem, then select a Powershot Canon that uses four batteries.

As with any current digital camera, use the two non-rechargeables they give you with the camera to learn to work the thing and then switch to 2500mah NIMH. Get a bigger SD card and save the 16 that comes with it for backup. (512 will keep you busy for a few days at least until you can dump it onto your computer or print the contents.)

Get a case for it. They will scratch if they rattle around, as will any camera. Case Logic makes very nice cases that will hold just the camera or the camera, a set of spare batteries (It's worth the money to carry an extra set ) and the little SD in case your bigger one dies or gets full.

The camera rates five stars except for the design problem noted by a number of identical complaints about its malfunction.
Great camera, but lens has a bit of distortion
Overall, this is a great point-and-shoot digital camera. I'm not a photographer or an enthusiast, but the pictures I've taken with this camera look very good. The camera also comes with a sizable number of user-adjustable settings for those who want more control over their photos. Another big plus is the A510's use of SD cards and AA batteries, which make this a flexible and cheap camera to operate.

On the downside, shutter speed is a bit slow in high-quality mode, which can be annoying when you're trying to capture an exact moment (blowing out candles, etc.). The only other downside I've noticed is that the lens tends to distort vertical lines, particularly toward the sides of the frame, more than other cameras I've used before. Despite these two issues, I'm glad I have this camera--it's a keeper.
Keep handy your Cannon warranty
Cannon A510 and A520 take good photos so long as the lens caps open. Within 8 months and after only 1 major vacation, we noticed this malfunction on our A510 while on vacation in India. Worse yet, a family member who had bought his A520 in the states, experienced the same malfunction within 3 months! Everytime you want to take a photo you have to open manually the lens cover. Fortunately I live within 5 miles of the only Canon Factory Service Center, which is in Elk Grove Village, IL. However, my family member doesn't have that luck; he is in India! Incidentally, while I was in the Cannon service center, there was a steady flow of frustrated Cannon owners. One asked why she had to return with problems for the third time; why Cannon didn't replace the camera, she asked. I suggest you keep handy your receipt, warranty info, and money for shipping, if you don't live near Elk Grove Village, IL. Judith
One TOUGH loaded little camera WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Bottom line....All the features of the Kodak EasyShares, MUCH better quality pictures, simple to use and SUPER TOUGH! Worth every penny!

I have 3 tots under the age of 3. On more than one occasion this camera has taken a NASTY hit on cement and wood flooring... it has been dropped, tossed, and even thrown (by a toddler), just the other day I dropped this camera HARD in the driveway - I am talking a very hard OH-THERE-IT-GOES-closed-eyes type hard whack. Other than a very tiny scuff on the top corner of the camera, this is no worse for the wear. I am so impressed!!

The picture quality is just like it was new out of the box. I have yet to have a SINGLE problem with this camera. The batteries are the only downfall, they are the pricey AA type, not rechargeable, unlike the EasyShares... but I find I get in about 300 pictures before the battery goes... versus the EasyShares, where off of one good charge, I get about half as many.... so that is about the same as far as I am concerned.

Kodaks also have that handy docking station, but just by dangling a USB cord to the side of the computer, this is ready to load in a snap.

I am NOT impressed at all by the Cannon photo software, I still prefer the much lesser priced Ulead for toying around with pics or even a NIKON program for editing... I use the cannon picture window to load pics (just plug and auto-load) then the other programs for editing, but then again, I did the same thing when I had the EasyShare...

As far as value goes, the durability is the biggest selling point, I went through 3 other EasyShares (different models) and 2 broke, one by a simple fall (not a hard one either), and the other just... died.... autopsy still out... the 3rd was stolen shortly after buying, which is how I inherited this Cannon - it was a replacement gift....

I could not be happier, if anything should happen to this little jewel, I would be replacing it with another A510... worth EVERY penny!
Tough
I'm an Airborne Infantryman and I bring my camera with me on just about every training exercise we do. That includes jumping out of airplanes and running and diving into the dirt, and for all these things I've had my canon in my cargo pocket the entire time and it 's still working. It may be all scratched up, a crack that runs across the screen and I may have to open the shutter on the lens manually when I turn it on. But it still takes awesome pictures and it has NEVER giving me any trouble. This is one tough camera..
It's half the size of the one that rolled off my trunk lid
This camera has a lot of great bells and whistles, even live video cam. It is simple to use, I started snapping right away without even opening the huge manual. It has few complications, great sound effects, cool automatic zoom lens that pops out when camera is turned on. It's lightweight (when compared to the 2000 model that I recently ran over with my car, just in case the fall off the trunk lid didn't entirely smash it.) I suggest the light-weight (yet thick) fabric case for good handling protection when not being used. This camera is a keeper - until I manage to destroy it - somehow. The cost makes the loss less painful while I get outstanding digital photos in the meantime. What's not to like?!
Good quality, good features, good price.
For the price, this camera is excellent. I am always satisfied with Canon's products. The 3.2 MP resolution may seem a little low, but if you have SuperFine turned on in your options, the pictures are plenty detailed (enough so that I can see details of my face that I would prefer not to in close up shots.) The zoom could be a little stronger; you will want to avoid the digital zoom (very poor quality, as with all digital zooms.) Other than that though, this camera serves its purpose well.
Pictures ok...lens cover is not!
I am experiencing the same issues as many others who have posted on this forum. The camera takes decent pictures and is very easy to use but after 3 months of use, the lens cover doesn't open all the way. I sent it to the Canon Factory Service Center in Elk Grove Village, IL and am now arguing with them about this being a warranty repair. It seems that both the lens opening issus and the warranty repairs are common for at Canon and this Service Center. Including shipping, they want $97 to repair this problem. I paid $230 for the camera! They did offer to sell me a factory reconditioned A520 for $99!!
Great camera
Great camera! Good image quality, easy to use, plenty of modes.
Definetely recommended.

Only thing I don't like is that the dial can be a little hard to turn sometimes.
Great value when working
I've had the A510 for about six months and have been pleasantly surprised by the ease of use and reasonable picture quality for a 3.2M camera.
After six months the lens and cover have jammed and I noticed that many Amazon reviewers have had the same issue. One evening I took several pictures and the next morning the camera would not operate.
I'm hoping the service center can provide me better service than some of the reviewers.
Great customer service, good camera
My mom & I have each have one of these cameras. Neither, one of us has had any problems until recently. I dropped mine while taking pictures with the timer. The drop on my tile floor smashed the telescoping lens out of alignment and wouldn't close and gave a E8 error on the screen. I contacted the canon US website then, I sent it into the canon repair center in IL. It cost $87 to have it repaired and shipped back. It took about a week and a half to have it returned to me.
The only thing I would improve about this camera is the speed, I had trouble taking pictures of my son on the merry go round(but it could be that I need to change settings). It has many features on it and accessories to add on. Since, I am learning more about digital photography this is a great little starter camera to have with many features that canon is known for. Also recently I've been looking at some of the newer canon models, their casing/ bodies look/feel really cheap to me. It may make them lighter but it makes me really afraid that I would break them.
I like the Canon ELPH models better
I have owned this camera for about a year and I have never really enjoyed it. For a point and shoot it is bad, it takes pictures way too slowly and I often miss out on a good shot. It is also not as user friendly as I would have hoped it to be with so many scene settings. While I enjoy some of them, most of the time my pictures turn out grainy (in low light), whitewashed (with flash) or blurry (of even slowly moving objects). I have tried changing the exposure time and shutter speed to counter some of these things, but I rarely get a good picture when I need it. I never had these problems with my ELPH s200. This camera is also a lot more bulkier as well, and the cover over the lens has started to stick so that it does not fully open when turned on. If given the option I would not buy this camera again.
Canon A510 camera...From L. Orr.
I agree with M. Arse with the 2star rating. I was disappointed with this camera from the beginning. Not a user friendly one and the pictures turn out very grainy with bad color quality unless you are in an optimum light. I'm interested in the 7 Mp camera Canon offers. I've read that it has much better shutter speed. Recommended??
The Canon A 510 PowerShot sucks
I admit that I'm far from an expert on digital cameras. I did take over 32,000 photographs with 35mm cameras for over 20 years.

I purchased a 510 PowerShot in July of 2005. It wasn't too long before the zoom on the cameras lens wouldn't work. I contacted Canon over this and can you believe this company had the audacity to charge ME for shipping THEIR faulty camera back to them. I can understand them saying, 'we'll charge you at first, BUT once we establish that the fault is due to us, we'll then reimburse you back.'

I enclosed a type written letter with the camera asking that Canon contact me when they received my camera (in the mail) and I also asked that they contact me when it was being shipped back. (I also emailed them the same request). Neither of my wishes was ever fulfilled on Canon's behalf.

That in itself was enough for me and I've been bitter about that ever since. I've also told every person that I've met who wanted to buy a digital camera about this incident. I'm pleased to say, I've steered most away from this company.

What else can I say about this camera:

This camera is slow at times after its taken a picture. I've missed out on some good shots due to this.

It eats batteries like there's no tomorrow so one MUST have rechargeable AA's to even make this camera worth its while.

I've not used other digital cameras so maybe they are all this way but if I take a 3 minute movie (with this camera) in my home during the day and go outside, most things outside are VERY WHITE. Almost like looking at an infra red photograph.

When filming outside, when one goes inside during the day, everything is dark. Like I said, maybe all digital cameras are this way?

I wouldn't recommend this camera or anything that Canon makes if you want my personal opinion. Think about that. You have to pay the shipping for a camera that's barely a few months old and still UNDER warranty. That's disgusting, that's all I have to say.

There should be a ZERO for this, not a 1 star!
Go bad too soon
I purchased a 510 PowerShot in summer of 2005. After couple time of use the zoom on the cameras lens wouldn't work anymore. I cound't take any picture anymore. I contacted Canon over this and they ask me to pay shiping to send the camera to them to fix.
Great Camera!
I've had my Canon A510 for over a year and I still love it. I've taken it on vacation with me several times, including one trip to Yellowstone Park, where I took about 1000 pictures. It's great. It's small and light and I like the way it fits my hand. It's fast. I never have to spend time waiting on it. It takes great pictures! It uses 2 batteries and the batteries last longer than my last camera lasted using 4. The only problem I've had is that occassionally the lens cover will stick and not completely open. I can just barely touch it with my finger and it unsticks and opens the rest of the way so that's not a major issue.
still going
My first digicam, bought it 2 years ago.
Simple to use, great pictures, and a year ago (and hundreds of pictures ago) I dropped it (no in its case) on a cobblestone road - no damage.
Have never seen the need to replace it.
I like the common batteries it uses and the SD memory.
Great pictures, sucks batteries like crazy
We have two Canon Powershot cameras and they take great pictures, are simple to use and are nice and small. Do yourself a favor and buy a model with a rechargable lithium battery. It will pay for the difference quickly. Digital cameras including the A510 drain batteries incredibly quickly.
love this camera
The Canon 510 takes fantastic photos! I've had trouble in the past with shaky pictures from other digital cameras. But not with this one. They are clear and beautiful, even up close! I've gotten some great shots of my first grade students as they are moving and working. All crystal clear! I can even take close up photos of books to show on computer monitor and the text is clear and readable. Love the movie mode, too. I like the ease of point and shoot, but if you want to change manual settings are available too.
No cons, I've had it for a year now and have just bought 2 more Canons for Christmas gifts for kids because I'm so delighted with mine. I picked up the 540 (because it has a really nice big viewscreen) and the Elph (because it will fit in her purse easily!) But I find my 510 takes just as clear pictures and it is easy!
Terrific Camera
I purchased this 1 year ago as a Christmas present for my inlaws. They strictly used film cameras and hardly used their computer. They love the camera and the software that it came with. There have been no complaints or concerns over the past year. I definitely recommend this product.
love it !
its one of best I own for the money , easy to zoom and operate.
No doubt, one of the best reasonable cameras
I bought it after reading tons of reviews. I vote it as the best camera under 150$. High quality picture, rich functions, universal interface. I heard it can afford up to 2GB SD card. So take your video clips after buying a hight discounted 1GB or 2GB SD card.Super!
